"RARE" - its a term that gets thrown around a lot in collecting circles. Of course as you know there are a few different kinds of "rare" . There is the most common one these days, decks that are "limited" [like beanie babies] being produced the sake of collectibility and deemed "rare" based upon the concept that because they were made in some small sort of lot they are in fact "rare". Lets be real, none of these dacks will get skated and there will be the same production amount always. There is nothing RARE about them.Next we have decks that are in fact "rare" in the true sense of the word. Decks that were possibly produced in large numbers once upon a time but due to the fact that these were created in 70’s 80’s or 90’s ... before it became a thing to collect. Many if not all were skated [as skateboards were intended] and there just aren't that many floating around anymore. When someone first gets in to collecting in search of that ONE deck from their childhood, they find out just what this definition word "RARE" means. It can be frustrating, exhausting and expensive to fill this void. This is the void the reissue market filled. To the newbie collector, snapping up a reissue works, for a while. But after a while [it may take many years] a crappy reissue just doesn't cut it. Nothing beats the real thing. And the hunt for the "RARE" is on again.
Lastly we have a group of "rare" that is truly that… because.. Well… it simply just does not exist. Stuff like prototypes, personal riders, test prints, one offs, original art and that whole sort of thing fall into this category. Over the years I've seen my share of both hunters and gatherers of this kind of stuff. Every now and again a personal rider pops up, or some one off decks pop out into the open market for everyone to drool over. But on the whole this category of rare is the most treasured and coveted because what they are is something truly unique in a class of their own.
I guess that leads me to these things I stumbled over. Punk Rock Skateboards laminates. These shouldn't exist and when they did make it out there it was because they were doing a final design and seeking approval from the band or management before running to production. In fact, one of the laminates I have didn't make it into production as it was rejected in this stage. So that would be the only copy of this deck design floating around. This GERMS pre production laminate proof you are looking at later met approval and though people would consider the PRS skateboards themselves "rare" to come across,… This laminate would be one of a kind and of the rarest.
